Music Festival

Emma Lilley, 6J | Activities Leader

On Friday, 24 March, Loreto Normanhurst had the Music festival where everyone came together to sing and enjoy each other's talents. It started with a smooth start with smiles filling the audience. There were some introductions until we had our first act which was Primary Voices and Primary Choir.

The Primary Choir was waiting on the side of the stage to sing our song for this year. “Sky full of Stars,” which we had been practicing for weeks. Afterwards, I felt relieved and really happy that we had sung beautifully and that it was time for us to watch the beautiful talents around us. Loreto is built up from talents and hobbies that it is so fun to watch everyone perform and take part. There were some beautiful dances and musical items followed by the Primary Band.

It finally came to the second part of the night. The long awaited high school House Choirs took to the stage one by one singing that makes the songs seem like it is one person singing. The conductors were keeping the beats and the hype. The results were in and the wait felt like forever. But congratulations to…… Maye who sang 'Que Sera'.

5P Project Compassion Initiative - The Lolly Success

Julia Klimkeit and Sophia Workman | 5P

Julia and I decided we wanted to do something to help people in need during Lent. We decided to sell lollies to raise money and we would put what we earned in the Project Compassion box. We wanted to give the money we raised to Project Compassion because they help people who aren't as fortunate as us.

We made lolly packs for a cheap price, in small and jumbo sizes. We made sure to check the ingredients for any nuts or other allergic ingredients. We walked to people's houses all over the street to sell the lollies. We said that we were raising money for Project Compassion. The fellow neighbours wanted to join in, so they gave us extra money.

We had to overcome a few challenges along the way, but we persevered to help others. It was very hot and not everyone had cash to pay for the lollies. A good thing was that we beat our goal by a lot! Our goal was to raise $10 but we ended up raising $27.15. Overall, what we did was not huge but if everyone does something small it can have a big impact. We were very proud of our achievements and beating our goal.

Cyber Safety Talk

On Monday, 27 March 2023 we enjoyed a very educational visit and talk from Senior Constable Debbie Coppard from Hornsby Police Station. She taught us about the importance of cyber safety. She talked about how we can be safe online, including ways to avoid being hacked and how to deal with scams. Given the amount of technology available today, it is obviously very important to be vigilant about the risk of cyber-attacks, especially for children and young people. Personally, my favourite part of the presentation was all the videos on how to stay safe online. Some useful tips and reminders that were shared with us included:

  • Never post photos or videos online of you at school or in your school uniform.
  • If you feel unsafe, talk to a trusted adult (for example a parent or teacher).
  • Never take photos or videos of people that seem funny and post them to social media.

Octavia Chaaya

On Monday Year 5 and 6 listened to a talk from a NSW Police Officer. She talked about how to stay safe online. We learnt what types of things are appropriate to share on the internet, what to do if ever we see a scammer or notice someone acting suspiciously, and who to talk to if we find ourselves in trouble online. My favourite part of this experience was the question time at the end because it was a great chance to hear other people’s questions - some of which I wouldn’t have thought to ask. It was a very informative presentation on how to stay safe - so we can confidently go online for education and relaxation.

Lizzy Peng

On Monday we had a police officer come in and talk about cyber bullying. We learnt so much from her like how cyber bullying is a criminal offence. One of the things I picked up from Monday was you should not believe everything you see online because a lot of people are out there trying to take advantage of vulnerable people like us.

Lily Tudehope

I know that we have learnt a lot from the cyber safety talk on Monday. I personally liked the videos because one was a real scenario and I now know what misleading information online can look like. I also enjoyed the videos because you had to spot the information leaked. I learnt to not be silly and make fun online, as the person on the other end might not think it’s funny. I know many online account settings of primary girls have changed this week!

The Australian Speech Communication Association Examinations

Ms Amanda Thomas | Speech and Drama Teacher

The Australian Speech Communication Association (ASCA) examinations are an integral part of the extra-curricular Speech & Drama program offered at Loreto. Students work towards an exam, held in November each year, and perform in front of an examiner and audience made up of peers. The exam is designed to help the development of oral communication, public speaking and critical thinking.

After a three year pause due to Covid, on Saturday, 18 March, ASCA held their annual award ceremony at Ravenswood School for Girls with four students from Loreto receiving awards for outstanding achievement. I’m pleased to announce that Eva Parratt (Year 9) and Elizabeth Peng (Year 6) were awarded the Senior and Junior Studio Medals for the highest exams results with marks of 97% and 93% respectively. Adrina Jamshidi (Year 8) and Elena Brinkmann (Year 6) also received High Distinctions in their exams and were the deserving recipients of the Senior and Junior Studio Achievement Award for consistent effort throughout the year.

Eva Parratt was also invited to perform at the ASCA ceremony and delighted the audience with her exceptional portrayal of the Grand High Witch from Roald Dahl’s novel ‘The Witches’. Well done Eva!

More information about the ASCA syllabus can be found on their website.
