Evening of Eminence

On Thursday, 26 October Term 4, I got to experience the 2023 Evening of Eminence which Year 6 had been preparing during library lessons and during the holidays. At the start of the evening, we had some prayers and words of wisdom from Ms Bryce. It was such a thrilling event to hear all the bio riddles and see all the posters and presentations. My favourite part of the night was when we got to listen to all the bio riddles and see everyone’s amazing costumes. For my eminent woman I chose Catherine, Princess of Wales. She works with children, raises money for different causes and is involved in over 20 charities. I chose Catherine Middleton because she is an amazing role model to look up to and she never gives up. In conclusion, it was a terrific memorable experience I will never forget. Sophie, 6B

Leading up to Week 3, Year 6 has been preparing to present their eminent women posters and bio riddles. The night was fun for all, starting with a welcome from Ms Ugonotti, Mrs Board, Ms Bryce and Primary School Leaders. Ms Bryce has helped all the girls in Year 6 during their research and creating their presentation. Each girl chose one woman from the past or the present and researched everything about her. Afterwards, we all created our posters and structured our bio riddles. Some of us decided to rhyme the lines, like a poem. This process was a bit challenging, as we were trying to make it as fun and interesting as possible. On the night each student presented their bio riddle to their class and parents. Parents then tried to guess who their eminent woman was. There was a lot of excitement in this, and I think it challenged the parents’ knowledge and made them think. The night and the process leading up to it was fun and enjoyable, although I had faced challenges, it was worth it. I’m sure this memory will stay with me during high school. Ella, 6D

On Thursday, 26 October, Year 6 presented a poster and bio riddle that they created about an eminent woman. Over the weeks, Year 6 researched their eminent woman in library time and at home.

To start off the night, parents were gathered in the Learning Common to get a run-through about how the night would proceed. As the parents gathered in their daughter's classroom, girls read their bio riddles which gave clues about who their woman was. The parents then had a go at guessing! After presenting each bio riddle parents had the opportunity to walk around and see everyone's poster. Their poster included photos and information like birth and career. Lots of the girls decided to dress up as their woman too!

Then the girls had a chance to walk around and see their peers' amazing work. This was an amazing chance to work on our research skills and develop inspiration to be like our eminent woman. We speak for everyone by saying that we had a wonderful time! Emma and Charlotte, 6J

Primary Orientation Day

Last week we had the honour of meeting our new Year 5 students for 2024. The day was full of information and excitement, culminating with a taster of a few sports to finish. We are looking forward to having our new students join our community and hope to see them get involved in as much sport as possible over the next 8-year journey! Mr David Brock, Head of Sport

On Friday, 3 November, Year 5 welcomed their new buddies for 2024 with approachable hearts. All the current Year 5 students were feeling very nervous but excited to make friendships with new people that would be joining the friendly Loreto community. Parents and students were told about several opportunities and extra-curricular activities that Loreto Normanhurst has to offer.

The day was filled with a range of fun activities for everyone to get to know the school, the teachers, and the current Primary School Leaders. Year 5 took this special event as an opportunity to showcase their leadership skills and qualities.

Our new parents also had lots of lovely opportunities to meet other parents and talk to staff members at morning tea and in the parent information sessions.

We hope that all new students and parents joining the amazing Loreto community had an awesome experience. We can’t wait to see them again on the first day of school for 2024! Kyra and Olivia, 5P

IPSHA Gymnastics

On Thursday, 2 November the IPSHA Gymnastics Carnival took place at the Sydney Gymnastics and Aquatic Centre. Thursday was an early start for the Primary girls and their coaches, but they were ready for a busy day of gymnastics. The girls demonstrated the skills and routines they have been practicing all year which resulted in some exceptional results!

The Level 1 students took home 1st place overall as a team, and their individual apparatus scores awarded places to 1 or more of the girls on bar, vault and floor.

Our Level 2 and 4 girls, proving just as competitive, both placed 2nd overall. The Level 3 team came in at 5th and our Level 5 & 7 girls gave the other schools some great competition with 2x 1st, 1x 2nd and 1x 3rd place.

Congratulations to all the girls who participated in the tough competition and for the amazing show of team camaraderie and school spirit whilst at competitions.

A special thank you to our gymnastics coach Lauren for supporting the IPSHA girls on the day. She was accompanied by student coaches Naisha and Saskia (Year 10) who were amazing in coaching and supporting the girls as well.

See a reflection from some of our gymnasts below:

On Thursday, 2 November, we participated in the IPSHA Gymnastics Carnival. There were many levels ranging from Level 1 to Level 10 depending on how good you were. In our IPSHA Loreto Team, we had many level ones, twos, and threes, but also there was one person involved in level four, one person in level five and one person in level seven.

We arrived by a Loreto minivan at the Sydney Gymnastics and Aquatic Centre (SGAC) in Rooty Hill. We did our hair into high buns, got dressed into our leotards which were shimmery white ombre into navy. It had silver sparkles and nice details. After that, we went straight onto the floor to warm up. The apparatus are floor, vault, bars and beam. Floor was first up, and we did our routine which included L handstands, forward rolls, passes, certain types of jumps and more. After the routine, we had to present to the judges and wait for them to give us the scores. Then when we were finished with the floor, we went to vault. Vault was really quick as it was a straight jump off a 60cm box onto the vault straight onto the mat, but you have to pay attention to be absolutely dead straight. We had 2 attempts to make it perfect.

Two apparatus were left; bars and beam, with bars being next, we waited in line for our turn. The level one uneven bars routine was two tuck swings (with regrip) then a front support position into two casts off the bar into a forward roll. You have to really go all out on bars to impress the judges. Bars was one of our favourite events as it is fun to apply chalk and do a bunch of tricks. Beam was the last event for us, and our level one routine was a straddle mount, four-point steps, straight jump drill, then straight jump off. Once we were done with all our routines, we went to the canteen, which had really good food such as chips, doughnuts, meat pies, slushies, ice-cream and more.

We chatted for a bit, supported our friends when they did their routine until it was time to go home. It was a really fun day at the IPSHA Gymnastics Carnival, certainly a day to remember. We definitely recommend gymnastics as a great extra-curricular activity for everyone. Saheli and Julia, 5P

Let's Make the Bursary an Everyday Conversation!

We're the Year 12 Student Bursary Committee, led by Tahlia Moses, School Vice Captain. Our mission? Growing awareness of the Loreto Normanhurst Bursary Program and raising much-needed funds to support girls in financial need to experience a Loreto Normanhurst education.

Unlocking Opportunities with the LN Bursary Program

Since 2002, the Loreto Normanhurst Bursary Program has awarded over 70 bursaries. Through this initiative, we extend the chance for girls facing financial challenges to conquer ‘First Loreto then the world’. The Year 12 Student Bursary Committee believes this opportunity shouldn't be confined to those who can afford it. Without this program, we'd lack the diversity that enriches our community and education.

It's More Than Fundraising: Growing Awareness with Fun and Enthusiasm

Our mission is not only about fundraising but also about raising awareness, all while having fun and shining a light on what matters for women everywhere.

So, what are we doing?

In Term 4, we're gearing up to support the Christmas Bursary Appeal, and here's what's on our exciting agenda:

1. Inspiring Awareness through Assembly

We're ready to take the stage at the school assembly to enlighten everyone about what our Bursary Program is and why it's vital to raise funds for it. Let's make it a topic of everyday conversation.

2. We’re selling Pearl Bracelets

These bracelets for $50 each immortalise the wise words of Gonzaga Barry, who said that her beloved Loreto children were like a string of pearls, each one unique and valuable but when strung all together they create something even more beautiful.

In 2024 we’re gearing up to raise awareness and raise some funds by washing cars, and taking part in the highly anticipated annual contest of talent, and friendly rivalry in the Normo/Riverview Annual Netball match! So, stay tuned!!!

We invite everyone, from parents to teachers to fellow students, to join the fun.

Together, let's make the Loreto Normanhurst Bursary Program a topic we discuss daily, ensuring that opportunities are accessible to all and that our community remains enriched with diversity. Your support and involvement mean the world to us. Let's make a difference!
